Gaining Weight On Weight Watchers

Gaining Weight On Weight Watchers

Reader question: I recently went vegetarian and have noticed I've gained weight. The only changes I've made to my diet have been adding more avocado, more nuts, more organic veggies and greens, more cage-free eggs, and more cheese. Everything else has stayed the same, including my exercise regime. What's going on?

Ashley's answer: I get questions like yours so often. Someone makes a dietary change, maybe for a health goal or maybe to try to lose weight, and is disappointed to notice weight gain. Since you're not my patient, I can only share the questions I would ask, but these should help you investigate what the issues could be.

You mentioned that "everything else has stayed the same", but I would consider that factors outside of your food and exercise can impact your health, including your weight. Has your sleep changed recently, in either quantity or quality? How is your digestion—are you having regular bowel movements? Are you experiencing any bloating or discomfort after eating or before bed or on waking?

When it comes to your food report, I notice a common theme: your use of the word "more". While I am thrilled to see more organic veggies and greens, the increased quantities of the other foods could be a factor. It can be helpful to review the proper portion sizes on my nutrition plan to make sure you are not giving your body too much at any one time.

And finally, when making the switch to a plant-based diet, it's good to explore a variety of plant options, like seeds (hemp seeds are a great protein source) and whole grains (like quinoa, millet, amaranth, and wild rices). While it's great you're choosing high-quality versions, you may want to expand your horizons beyond nuts, eggs, and cheese, which may be higher in calories despite providing nutrients.
